Napalm Vulcan pummels the target and everything around it with repeated Shadow blasts that ignore magic defense and may inflict Curse.
Overview
The successor to Napalm Beat, Napalm Vulcan is the High Wizard's answer to heavily armoured targets. It ignores the enemy's magic defense entirely and then turns that same magic defense into extra damage, so the tougher the target's magical protection, the harder each blast lands. Its Shadow element and small splash make it a reliable pick against clustered enemies that resist the elemental bolts.
Mechanics
Each blast strikes every enemy in a 5×5 area around the target, and the full damage is applied to each of them rather than being shared.
Damage formula (per hit): Damage = (2 × target's MDEF) + MATK ÷ 2.
Number of hits = 2 + SkillLv.
The magic defense portion is calculated separately for every enemy caught in the splash, so a well-protected target takes more from the same cast than a fragile one standing beside it. The skill also ignores magic defense when the damage is applied, so that protection never reduces the result.
Every cast can inflict Curse on the enemies it hits:
Curse chance = 5 + 5 × SkillLv (%), lasting 30 seconds.
Leveling
| Level | Hits | Damage per hit | Curse chance | Cast time | SP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | (2 × MDEF) + MATK ÷ 2 | 10 % | 1.6 s | 20 |
| 2 | 4 | (2 × MDEF) + MATK ÷ 2 | 15 % | 2.0 s | 45 |
| 3 | 5 | (2 × MDEF) + MATK ÷ 2 | 20 % | 2.4 s | 70 |
| 4 | 6 | (2 × MDEF) + MATK ÷ 2 | 25 % | 2.8 s | 95 |
| 5 | 7 | (2 × MDEF) + MATK ÷ 2 | 30 % | 3.2 s | 120 |
Notes
- Damage is not split between targets: every enemy in the splash takes the full amount.
- The skill can also be aimed at enemy traps placed on the ground.
- Curse pairs well with Drain Life, which deals double damage to cursed enemies.
