Wizard Quest
The Wizard Quest is the job change quest that turns a Mage into a Wizard. It runs on the top floor of the Geffen Tower, where two Mages share the work: Catherine takes the application and performs the change, and Raulel runs the two hard parts. The quest is split into three tests: a magic material collection, a written exam of ten questions, and a three room combat trial in a separate arena.
There is a shortcut. A Mage who has reached Job Level 50 is changed on the spot by Catherine, with no tests at all. This also works in the middle of the quest: if you reach Job Level 50 while the tests are still open, she approves you the moment you talk to her.
Requirements
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class | Mage. Novices are sent to the Mage guild in Geffen first. |
| Job Level | 40 to apply for the tests. At Job Level 50 the tests are skipped entirely. |
| Skill points | All skill points must be spent. Catherine refuses to perform the job change while you have unused points, on both the quest path and the Job Level 50 shortcut. You can still apply and take the tests with points in reserve, so spend them before you come back for the change. |
| Preparation | SP recovery items, a bolt spell of each element and enough levels to kill a room of monsters in three minutes. |
Where everyone stands
The Geffen Tower entrance is in the middle of Geffen (geffen 120, 113). The quest NPCs are all on the top floor, which you reach by working your way up the stairs and warps inside the tower.
| NPC | Location | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Catherine | gef_tower 111, 37 | Application, first test and the final job change. |
| Raulel | gef_tower 102, 24 | Written exam and the combat trial. |
| Perro | gef_tower 107, 36 | A talking dog who calls herself Maria. Optional hints for the material collection. |
| Arena Assistant | Inside the test arena | Explains the arena rules and hosts the waiting room that starts the combat trial. |
Step 1: Apply with Catherine
Talk to Catherine (gef_tower 111, 37) and say you want to become a Wizard, then confirm the application. Below Job Level 40 she sends you back out to gain experience. At Job Level 40 or higher she accepts the application, explains the three tests and gives you the material list on the spot.
At Job Level 50 the conversation is much shorter: she congratulates you, changes your class and hands over the reward.
Step 2: The magic materials
Catherine picks one of two sets at random when she accepts your application, and tells you the list immediately. The set is fixed from that moment, so there is nothing to reroll.
| Set 1 | Set 2 |
|---|---|
| 10 Red Gemstone | 5 Crystal Blue |
| 10 Blue Gemstone | 5 Green Live |
| 10 Yellow Gemstone | 5 Red Blood |
| 5 Wind of Verdure |
Bring everything back to her and she takes the items and sends you to Raulel in the corner. Talking to her again repeats the list if you forget it. Only the contents of your inventory are checked, so bought materials count exactly the same as hunted ones.
Perro, the talking dog next to Catherine, gives hunting hints for whichever set you were given. They are suggestions rather than the only sources.
| Material | Suggested source |
|---|---|
| Red Gemstone | Thief Bugs and Thief Bug Eggs in the Prontera Culverts |
| Blue Gemstone | Cornutus, Vadon and Marse in Byalan Dungeon, or the Geffen magic shop |
| Yellow Gemstone | Condor, Picky and sometimes Golem in the desert |
| Crystal Blue | Cornutus, Kukre, Marina and Vadon in Byalan Dungeon |
| Green Live | Insect monsters such as Horn, Mantis and Vitata |
| Red Blood | Elder Willow, Metaller and Scorpion in the desert |
| Wind of Verdure | Hornet, Stainer and Steel Chonchon |
Step 3: The written exam
Raulel (gef_tower 102, 24) offers you one last chance to walk away, then starts the exam. It is ten questions worth ten points each, drawn at random from one of three question sets: one about magic, one about monsters and one about Mages themselves. He does not tell you which answers you got wrong, only the final score.
The pass mark depends on the attempt:
- First attempt: you need 90 points or more, so at most one wrong answer.
- Any later attempt: 80 points is enough, so at most two wrong answers.
Failing simply sends you away. Talk to him again and he restarts the exam from the beginning, as often as you like.
After a failed exam, Catherine will sell you a hint for 1 Apple Juice. She drinks it and then explains that the exam is drawn from three topics, magic, monsters and Mages, and where to study for each. It is flavour rather than a list of answers, so it is optional.

Step 4: The combat trial
Talk to Raulel again once you have passed the exam. He offers an explanation of the trial, and either answer eventually sends you to the arena. Choosing to hear him out costs nothing and he ends with the same offer to go in.
Choosing to go back to town costs you nothing. Nothing is recorded until you actually enter the arena, so you can walk away and come back to the same conversation later.
Entering warps you to the arena lobby and sets your save point to Geffen, so a death during the trial sends you there. The Arena Assistant explains the rules; to actually start, join the waiting room chat next to him. Only one candidate runs at a time, so if somebody else is inside you have to wait for the arena to reopen. A full run takes roughly five to ten minutes.
The trial is three rooms in a fixed order, Water then Earth then Fire. Each room has two phases: clear every monster in the room within three minutes, then a guardian spawns with its own shorter timer. Beating the guardian moves you on, and you are fully healed on the way into the Earth and Fire rooms.
| Room | Phase | Monsters | Time limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water Room | Clear out | 1 Obeaune, 1 Phen, 1 Shellfish, 1 Vadon, 1 Cornutus, 1 Marina, 1 Marin, 1 Magnolia | 3 minutes |
| Guardian | 1 Marine Sphere and 4 Hydra | 1 minute | |
| Earth Room | Clear out | 1 Hode, 1 Savage, 1 Mantis, 1 Yoyo, 1 Deniro, 1 Caramel, 1 Giearth, 1 Bigfoot, 1 Orc Warrior, 1 Vitata | 3 minutes |
| Guardian | 1 Flora and 6 Mandragora | 1 minute | |
| Fire Room | Clear out | 1 Zerom, 1 Desert Wolf, 1 Goblin, 1 Scorpion, 1 Frilldora, 1 Peco Peco, 1 Elder Willow, 1 Metaller | 3 minutes |
| Guardian | 1 Greatest General and 2 Horong | 2 minutes |
Announcements count the remaining time down for you in every phase. If a timer runs out, the monsters are removed, you are sent back to Geffen and the arena resets for the next candidate. Nothing is lost except the time.
Clearing the Fire guardian passes the trial. You are congratulated, given a few seconds to read the closing announcements and then warped back to the top of the Geffen Tower, next to Catherine.
Step 5: Retrying the combat trial
Raulel does not simply wave you back in. Before every new attempt he asks five questions worth twenty points each, and you need 80 points or more, so at most one wrong answer. Pass and he heals you fully and sends you back to the arena. Score less and you have to talk to him again and answer them once more.
| # | Question | Correct answer |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Choose the monster with a different attribute than the others. | Cornutus |
| 2 | Choose the monster that is not a looting one. | Zerom |
| 3 | Which of these monsters does not recognize casting? | Marina |
| 4 | Choose the spell that would be efficient against a Marine Sphere. | Lightning Bolt |
| 5 | Choose the monster that can move. | Frilldora |
There is also a way out for players who keep getting stuck. After six failed or partial runs Raulel starts offering a trade: bring him 1 Worn Out Scroll for his research and he passes you on the trial without you having to finish the arena. On the visit where he first mentions it he still sends you in; from then on he asks each time whether you want another run or want to hand over the scroll.
Step 6: Return to Catherine
Go back to Catherine (gef_tower 111, 37). If your skill points are spent she congratulates you and performs the job change on the spot, then digs out your present.
Rewards
- Job change to Wizard
- Sight Blaster at level 1
- Drain Life at level 1
- 25 Blue Potions when you finish the tests, or 6 Blue Potions when you take the Job Level 50 shortcut
Both skills are granted permanently and cost no skill points. The Mage platinum skills, First Aid, Energy Coat and Napalm Beat, are handed out again at the same time in case you are missing any of them.
Tips
- Spend every skill point before you go back to Catherine for the change. She will not proceed otherwise, and it is the one gate in the quest that cannot be worked around.
- The Job Level 50 shortcut is much faster, but the three tests pay four times the potions. Decide which of the two matters more to you before you apply.
- The two material sets share no items, so gathering in advance is a gamble. Wait until Catherine names your list.
- Everything you turn in is consumed, so do not bring extras you want to keep.
- Aim for a clean run on your first exam attempt. One mistake is survivable, two are not, and only the retries relax the pass mark to 80.
- Once you have entered the arena even once, every later run is gated behind the five question quiz, so read it as part of the trial rather than a punishment.
- Bring a bolt spell of each element. Water for the Fire Room, Fire for the Earth Room and Wind for the Water Room cover almost everything you meet.
- The room timer is the real difficulty, not the monsters. Pull the far spawns towards you and keep casting rather than walking between them one at a time.
- Watch out for the Marine Sphere in the Water guardian phase, it explodes, and for the Greatest General in the Fire guardian phase, which is the hardest single fight in the trial.
- Restock SP items before you enter. You are healed between rooms but there is no shop inside the arena.
- If you ask Perro for the full explanation of the quest, she throws you out of the tower into Geffen Dungeon rather than into town, so do not ask while you are low on HP.
