'''Elements''' (also called properties or attributes) are a property carried by every player and monster, and by most attacks. They strengthen, weaken, or nullify damage when an attacking element meets a defending element.

Vortex Legends tunes a handful of cells away from the values other Ragnarok servers use:

* '''Earth self-damage fixed.''' Earth attacking an Earth-elemental target used to sit at a flat 100% regardless of level, unlike Water, Fire, and Wind, which all weaken sharply against their own element. Earth now follows the same curve as the other three: 25% at Level 1, 0% from Level 2 onward.
* '''Poison buffed further against Holy and Shadow at Level 4.''' Poison attacking a Level 4 Holy or Shadow defender deals 25% instead of the usual 50%.

The '''Sage Quest''' is the job change quest that turns a Mage into a [[Sage]]. It is run by the Schweicherbil Magic Academy in Juno and it is the longest of the second class quests: you enrol as a student, pass a written exam of twenty questions, survive a timed practical exam in an arena, study under one of three professors, and finally write and submit a dissertation to the Dean.

There is a shortcut. A Mage who is already '''Job Level 50''' becomes a Sage the moment they speak to the Dean or to the academy clerk, with no enrolment fee, no exams, no items and no dissertation. * Reaching Job Level 50 before you talk to anyone is by far the fastest route: the entire course collapses into one conversation and the enrolment fee disappears.
* Spend every Mage skill point before you enrol and again before your final visit to the Dean. Both NPCs refuse you while points are unspent.
* Compare the three payment options before choosing. The reduced fee is only offered when you are nearly broke, so if you are sitting on 50,000 zeny you either pay the full 70,000 or go and find the Old Magicbook and the Necklace of Wisdom.
* The written exam allows four wrong answers out of twenty and can be retaken as often as you like for free, so there is no reason to walk away from a bad set.
* Prepare for the arena before you enter. Rounds one and two are trivial for a Mage, but ''Academic Probation'' in round three is a Whisper with the Ghost property and a great deal of HP, and you only get one minute. Bolt spells are halved against it while '''Soul Strike''' and '''Napalm Beat''' are Ghost property and hit it far harder, so bring those and enough blue potions to chain them.
* The arena has no experience penalty and unlimited retries, so a failed run costs nothing but a walk back to Hermes Tris.

Talk to '''Raulel''' again once you have passed the exam. He offers an explanation of the trial, and either answer eventually sends you to the arena. Choosing to hear him out costs nothing and he ends with the same offer to go in.

Be aware that the moment you reach that decision you are counted as having started the trial, '''even if you choose to go back to town'''. Backing out is treated the same as a failed run, so the retry quiz in the next step applies from then on.

Entering warps you to the arena lobby and sets your save point to Geffen, so a death during the trial sends you there. The '''Arena Assistant''' explains the rules; to actually start, join the waiting room chat next to him. Only '''one candidate runs at a time''', so if somebody else is inside you have to wait for the arena to reopen. A full run takes roughly five to ten minutes.

Clearing the Fire guardian passes the trial. You are congratulated, given a few seconds to read the closing announcements and then warped back to the top of the Geffen Tower, next to Catherine.

* The two material sets share no items, so gathering in advance is a gamble. Wait until Catherine names your list.
* Everything you turn in is consumed, so do not bring extras you want to keep.
* Aim for a clean run on your first exam attempt. One mistake is survivable, two are not, and only the retries relax the pass mark to 80.
* Do not open the final conversation with Raulel until you actually intend to fight. Even declining counts as an attempt and puts the five question quiz between you and the arena forever after.
* Bring a bolt spell of each element. Water for the Fire Room, Fire for the Earth Room and Wind for the Water Room cover almost everything you meet.
* The room timer is the real difficulty, not the monsters. Pull the far spawns towards you and keep casting rather than walking between them one at a time.
* Watch out for the Marine Sphere in the Water guardian phase, it explodes, and for the Greatest General in the Fire guardian phase, which is the hardest single fight in the trial.
* Restock SP items before you enter. You are healed between rooms but there is no shop inside the arena.
* If you ask Perro for the full explanation of the quest, she throws you out of the tower into Geffen Dungeon rather than into town, so do not ask while you are low on HP.

Practical advice: hug the walls, keep Endure ready, and turn off any auto attack. If you go down before the tenth monster the attempt is lost and you take the test again. == Tips ==

* Reaching Job Level 50 before you talk to anyone is by far the fastest route: the whole quest collapses into one conversation and the reward doubles.
* Buy the Rosary first. Three separate steps check for it, and each refusal costs a walk back to Prontera Church.
* Keep the Rosary on until the battle test is finished. It is checked again at the very last NPC.
* Spend every Swordman skill point before your final visit to the Senior Crusader, or he will send you away at the last moment.
* For the battle test bring White Potions and a weapon that hurts Undead. Holy damage, Fire damage and a Rosary in the second accessory slot all help, and Zombies, Mummies and the Ghoul are all Undead.
* The corridor test and the battle grounds both block Teleport and Fly Wing, and neither map accepts a Warp Portal memo point.

The '''Knight Quest''' is the job change quest that turns a Swordman into a [[Knight]]. The whole quest takes place inside the Prontera Chivalry, where six Knights each run a trial of their own: an item collection, a knowledge quiz, a three stage combat trial, an etiquette test, a test of patience and a closing interview. When all of them have approved you, the Chivalry Captain performs the job change.

There is a shortcut. A Swordman who has reached '''Job Level 50''' can change class straight away by talking to the captain, with no trials at all. Starting the quest earlier does not lock you in: if you reach Job Level 50 while the quest is open, the captain still changes you on the spot.

* If you are already close to Job Level 50, the shortcut is faster than the trials and pays a larger reward. Compare the two before you apply.
* Collect the materials for Sir Andrew with the set list in front of you. The two sets share no items, so anything you gather in advance may be wasted.
* Everything you turn in to Sir Andrew is consumed, so do not bring extras you want to keep.
* For the combat trial, most of the first stage is Earth element and most of the second is Fire element, so a fire endowment for stage one and a water endowment for stage two help a lot. Stage three is a mix and a plain weapon does fine.
* The stage timer is short. Fight from the middle of the arena and pull the far spawns in rather than chasing them one by one.
* Before the patience test, unequip or disable anything that hits back on its own, and simply sit still.
* The tests can be retaken as often as needed. Nothing except your time is lost when a trial fails.
